Nintendo uses NFC technology

In the latest Wii U console, Nintendo uses NFC technology to introduce interaction between the virtual world of games and real Amiibo accessories. Amiibo accessories can be purchased from November 2014.

Amiibo

Nintendo Amiibo are figurines representing the characters of the manufacturer's games. They not only allow you to unlock unique content in games (heroes, skins, options), but also store your unique achievements. The solution means that players can transfer personalized content between consoles. It is possible to use Amiibo figures, e.g. to import your own avatar, levels, missions on your friend's console.

Why NFC

NFC technology, fast wireless transfer of information over a short distance, is an ideal solution for extending virtual content with real accessories. The prices of NFC chips are currently so low that they have little impact on the final price of Amiio accessories.

Undoubtedly, the advantages of NFC technology compared to the use of QR codes are:

- protection against counterfeiting/cloning of the product

- the ability to evolve the Amiibo avatar, i.e. changing the information stored in the figure along with the progress achieved in the game
